The rescheduled 2020 Great Midlands Fun Run [Sunday 20th September] has been cancelled.
We hope you, your family and friends are all well during these extraordinary and challenging times and we wish to express our condolences to anyone who has very sadly lost friends and loved ones.
It is heart-breaking to see so many people have lost their lives to this dreadful virus and many thousands more are facing long-term health challenges.Like everyone, we have monitored Covid-19 developments over the last few months.
We have contacted the Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport & Minister for Sport requesting clarification as to whether mass participation events, on the scale of the Great Midlands Fun Run, can realistically be staged any time this year.
However, the government has not been prepared to offer any such guidance.
Many of you will be aware that last week, organisers of the Great Manchester and The Great North Run, scheduled for the first two weekends of September were cancelled.
We are extremely disappointed to add to that statistic and confirm this year’s Great Midlands Fun Run, rescheduled for Sunday, 20th September has now been cancelled.
This will be the first time the annual Fun Run has not been staged in the Royal Town of Sutton Coldfield since the first event in 1982.
Despite the continued easing of lockdown regulations from 4 July, England’s Chief Medical Officer, Professor Whitty, during Tuesday’s Downing Street briefing, confirmed some degree of social distancing together with other health measures to mitigate the spread of Covid-19, would need to be in operation for the foreseeable future and quite possibly through winter.
It is also very likely ‘local flare-ups’ will continue as restrictions are eased which could result in local/regional if not a national lockdown at very short notice.
Taking all of these factors into account and considering the nature of the event, we have reached the conclusion it is not plausible to stage the Fun Run in September however much we, those who have registered for 2020 and the many charities and voluntary organisations to financially benefit would like the event to be staged.
Towards the end of next week w/c 29 June we will be contacting everyone who has registered to participate in this year’s event with the various options open concerning your 2020 registration.
We are now in the early stages of planning for the 2021 Great Midlands Fun Run on its traditional date of the final Sunday of spring half term, which next year will be Sunday, 6th June.
We hope that most, if not all of you will considering rolling over your registration to 2021 and thus securing your entry for next year’s event.
We are sorry to have to convey this news but hope you will appreciate and understand this decision is as disappointing for us as it is for you, your family and friends who would support you on the day, the charities and voluntary organisations who would directly benefit and indeed the royal town.
We will be in contact via the email provided on your registration during the first few days of July with details of registration options.
