2020 Great Midlands Fun Run rescheduled to 20th September
In these extraordinary times and challenging few months ahead for all of us, we have to allow people to focus on what is important at the moment and that is the health of themselves, their families, friends and neighbours.
It became acutely obvious after the government announcement on Thursday, 12th March and the further advice given on Monday 17th March, that the Fun Run could not take place on its traditional and scheduled date at the end of spring half-term i.e. 31 May.
We’d been quietly working on a contingency date, to ensure the many voluntary groups and commercial suppliers, who contribute to Fun Run day, were able to accommodate an alternative date in the autumn to enable us to postpone rather than cancel the event altogether.
We have to thank our commercial partners, suppliers and the voluntary groups who support the event, all of whom have been tremendously understanding, accommodating and quick to respond to our position.
Having taken the decision to reschedule the event, we wanted to secure a new date to give people as much notice as possible and to avoid some other major events already scheduled for the autumn including the Great North Run, the new date for The London Marathon, the Great Birmingham Run and school autumn half-term.
We will now continue preparations to stage the Great Midlands Fun Run on Sunday, September 20th. If you have registered for the 2020 event your registration will automatically be carried over to the new event so you need not take any further action.
Once we have a degree of clarity over whether we can proceed with the Fun Run this year, we will email all those to have so far entered advising what options are available should you not be able to participate on the rescheduled date which we appreciate may clash with existing events and/or personal commitments.
It will be strange not to be holding the event on its traditional date at the end of spring half-term but there’s been a Fun Run every year in Sutton Coldfield since 1982, including the first Great Midlands Fun Run in September 2003, and I’m hopeful that tradition will continue albeit in September of this year.
We will be suspending online registration until further notice and most likely beyond May Day Bank Holiday, Friday 8th May, hoping by that date we might a degree of clarity of the lifting of some of the restrictions. Assuming the Fun Run can be staged on the rescheduled date – Sunday 20th September registration will remain open via this link www.greatmidlandsfunrun.org until 11pm Monday, 27th July or when all 6000 available places have been filled – whichever occurs first.
In the meantime, please share this news with your friends, families and work colleagues so we can ensure as many people as possible know about the rescheduling of the Great Midlands Fun Run in September.
It would also be helpful if you could follow and like our social media pages on Facebook @greatmidlandsfunrun and twitter @greatmidsfunrun so you are kept up to date, as quickly as possible, on any further developments.
Above all, please take care and stay healthy.
